In a heartbreaking turn of events, a fatal crash occurred in Coram on Saturday, Feb. 24, resulting in the death of a 33-year-old man. The victim, identified as Raymond Hubbard of Coram, was in a wheelchair crossing the roadway in front of 541 Middle Country Road when tragedy struck.

Details of the Crash

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place around 10:15 p.m. when Hubbard fell out of his wheelchair onto the westbound lane and was struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. Despite efforts to save him, Hubbard was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Driver Arrested for Impairment

The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, Nicholas Doxtader, a 25-year-old from Centereach, was found to be impaired at the time of the crash. Suffolk County PD Major Case Unit detectives promptly arrested Doxtader and charged him with driving while ability impaired/drugs.

Legal Proceedings

Doxtader was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned later on Sunday, Feb. 25 at First District Court in Central Islip. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555.
