Wilfred “Gus” LeBlanc, a well-respected high school sports coach and educator, left a lasting impact on the community of Androscoggin County. His career was marked by numerous achievements in coaching and teaching, as he inspired countless students both on and off the field.

A Life Well-Lived

Gus LeBlanc, a native of Old Town, Maine, had a deep-rooted passion for sports and education. He began his journey as a football player at Old Town High School and continued his academic pursuits at the University of Maine in Orono. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history, he later obtained a master’s degree in guidance, setting the foundation for his impactful career.

Coaching Excellence

Throughout his career, LeBlanc took on various roles in different schools, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his students. At Dexter Area High School, he served as a guidance counselor, assistant principal, athletic director, and head football coach. Under his leadership, the football team achieved remarkable success, culminating in an undefeated season and a state title in 1984.

A Champion for Change

LeBlanc’s commitment to education extended beyond the sports field. As the principal of Leavitt Area High School, he spearheaded initiatives to support high-risk students and address pressing social issues such as emotional abuse and teenage pregnancy. His innovative approaches and dedication to his students earned him widespread admiration and respect.

LeBlanc’s tenure as the principal of Lewiston High School was marked by challenges and triumphs. In the face of adversity, such as the tragic loss of three students in a plane crash, he displayed strength and compassion in guiding the school community through grief and healing. His efforts to improve academic standards and extracurricular eligibility policies reflected his unwavering commitment to student success.

Continuing the Legacy

Even after his retirement, LeBlanc’s passion for coaching and mentoring persisted. His role as the headmaster of Lee Academy and later as the interim principal of Lewiston High School demonstrated his enduring dedication to education. Leading the Poland Regional High School football team to success, he continued to inspire young athletes and make a positive impact on their lives.
