Nex, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was conscious and alert when recounting the attack by three girls that occurred after Nex squirted them with water. In a police video released on Friday, Nex explained how the girls had been picking on them and their friends due to their unique way of dressing.
According to the video, the situation escalated in the bathroom when the girls made disparaging remarks about Nex and their friends. Nex retaliated by pouring water on them, leading to a physical altercation where Nex was overpowered and beaten by the girls.
Emergency Response and Tragic Outcome
Following the attack, Nex’s mother, Sue Benedict, called emergency responders to their home on February 8, expressing concern about Nex’s condition. Paramedics performed CPR and rushed Nex to the hospital, where they tragically succumbed to their injuries the next day.
The family, still grappling with the loss, has set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses and honour Nex’s memory. Sue Benedict, in a statement on the page, mentioned that the family was still adjusting to using Nex’s preferred name and pronouns.

Police conducted a thorough investigation, collecting evidence from the school where the altercation took place. While initial reports suggested a felony murder investigation, the police department later clarified that Nex’s death was not directly caused by the fight.
