In a recent development in the tragic case of the murder of nursing student Laken Hope Riley in Athens, Georgia, the brother of the main suspect has now been charged with possessing a fake green card. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Diego Ibarra, aged 29, was arrested for this offence after being apprehended by law enforcement.
Arrest and Charges
Diego Ibarra, the older brother of Jose Antonio Ibarra who stands accused of killing Riley, was taken into custody after a police officer identified him as matching the description of a suspect in the homicide investigation. It was during this encounter that Ibarra presented a fake green card, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.
Previous Arrests and Current Status
The DOJ revealed that this is not Ibarra’s first brush with the law. He had been previously arrested three times for various offences, including driving under the influence, theft by shoplifting, and failure to appear for a fingerprintable offence. Currently, Ibarra is in state custody awaiting an asylum hearing, as he claimed a credible fear of return to Venezuela.
