Arrest Made in Connection with Mahabage Shooting Incident

Authorities have apprehended another suspect in relation to the fatal shooting that occurred in Mahabage earlier this week. The suspect, identified as Sadees Kumara, was taken into custody in Narawelpiya South, Hakmana this afternoon.

Desertion from the Army

Reports indicate that Kumara had deserted the Army during his basic training in 2009 and officially left the service at a later date. He now faces charges of aiding and abetting in the shooting incident that resulted in the death of a meat shop owner near Elapitiwala Junction on Feb. 21.

Details of the Shooting

On the morning of Feb. 21, three unidentified assailants opened fire near the meat shop, fatally injuring the victim who was rushed to Colombo North Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The deceased, known as Hettiarachchige Don Sujith or “Ukkuwa”, was the brother-in-law of notorious gang leader “Welle Saranga” and a resident of North Batagama in Ja-Ela.

Motive Behind the Shooting

While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, suspicions point towards a rival gang led by “Dubai Nipuna” as orchestrating the murder. Reports suggest that Sujith had been receiving death threats from “Dubai Nipuna’s” gang prior to the incident.

Arrest of the Prime Suspect

The prime suspect, a Corporal in the Gemunu Watch Regiment at an Army camp in Batticaloa, was arrested early this morning after fleeing the camp upon the approach of Army intelligence officers. He is currently in custody and being investigated by the Police Special Task Force.

Ongoing Investigations

While two suspects are now in custody, the third suspect, the motorcyclist involved in the shooting, remains at large. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the remaining perpetrator and bring them to justice.
