Man Arrested After Shooting at Altamonte Springs Police

A man was arrested in Altamonte Springs after shooting at police officers during a disturbing incident at the Escondido Condominiums off East Altamonte Drive. The suspect, identified as 65-year-old Benjamin Ferris, was reported to be hallucinating and believed that unknown individuals were inside and outside his residence.

According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, officers responded to the scene around 11:08 p.m. after receiving reports of a man firing shots through the windows and doors of his apartment. During the confrontation, Ferris fired at the officers through the front door and a nearby window, injuring one officer with shattered glass in the eye.

Fortunately, no one else was harmed during the incident, and the police were able to apprehend Ferris without further escalation. He has since been charged with attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer and is currently in custody.

Community Engagement Officer Assists with Mental Health Care

Following the arrest, a specially trained Community Engagement Officer was called to the scene to help coordinate future mental health care for Ferris. This intervention aims to provide support and assistance to individuals in crisis situations, ensuring they receive the necessary care and resources for their well-being.
