Virginia State Police Investigate Fatal Crash in Wythe County

Virginia State PoliceVirginia State Police is currently investigating a tragic fatal crash involving a pedestrian that took place at 7:40 pm on Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2024) on Route 11 in Wythe County, Virginia.

A GMC truck pulling a box trailer was travelling along the 2900 block of Route 11 (W. Lee Highway) when it tragically collided with a pedestrian who was pushing a grocery cart along the road. The incident occurred in an area where there are no shoulders or sidewalks, making it a dangerous spot for pedestrians.

The pedestrian has been identified as Worley J. Stafford, a 66-year-old resident of Rural Retreat, Virginia, who sadly lost his life at the scene of the accident. The driver of the GMC truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

As the investigation into this heartbreaking incident continues, Virginia State Police are working diligently to determine the circumstances that led to the crash and to gather all relevant information to piece together what happened.
