Israeli Man Killed in Terror Shooting Attack Near Jerusalem
An Israeli man was tragically killed and 11 others were wounded in a terror shooting attack carried out by three Palestinian gunmen near a checkpoint between Jerusalem and the West Bank settlement city of Ma’ale Adumim on Thursday morning, police and medics reported.
Details of the Attack
The trio of gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at Israelis waiting in traffic while heading toward Jerusalem on the Route 1 highway, a few hundred meters before the az-Za’ayyem checkpoint, close to the West Bank town of the same name.
The victim, identified as 26-year-old Matan Elmaliah from Ma’aleh Adumim, was tragically killed in the shooting. The Magen David Adom ambulance service treated a total of 12 people, including a pregnant woman aged 23 in serious condition and four others in moderate condition.
Response and Casualties
Emergency teams found five cars with injured people inside, and one man in his 20s was declared dead at the scene. The pregnant woman underwent significant surgery at Shaare Zedek Medical Center and was in stable condition with no current risk to her life.
Two of the gunmen were shot dead by security forces and armed civilians at the scene, while the third gunman was later “neutralized” following police searches in the area. The attackers were armed with assault rifles, makeshift submachine guns, and a grenade.
Local Criticism
Local politicians criticized the security situation at West Bank checkpoints, calling the long lines a “death trap.” They urged security forces to take immediate action to create a safer environment for residents traveling to Jerusalem.
The attack came amid heightened tensions in Israel and the West Bank, with concerns about a possible escalation of violence. The terror group Hamas praised the attack as a “natural response” to Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
