The Tragic Incident in Athens, Georgia
In a devastating turn of events, a student’s suspected homicide has rocked the University of Georgia’s campus in Athens, Georgia. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, was a nursing student at the Augusta University College of Nursing, located in the same city as UGA.
Victim’s Background and Affiliations
Prior to her enrollment at Augusta University, Riley was an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia until the spring of 2023. She was also a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she was well-loved by her fellow sorority sisters.
Discovery of the Body
UGA police received a call from a friend of Riley’s who was concerned after she failed to return from a morning run at the intramural fields. Soon after, Riley’s body was discovered in a forested area behind Lake Herrick with visible injuries. Despite efforts to provide emergency aid, Riley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have indicated that foul play is suspected in Riley’s death, prompting the cancellation of all classes at UGA until Monday.
