Located in the heart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tragic incident unfolded that shook the community to its core. One-year-old Bre’asia Christine Dowdell suffered traumatic head injuries while under the care of two women, leading to her untimely death.

The Guilty Plea

Sharon Marie Meyers, one of the women charged in the killing of the young child, pleaded guilty to her role in the death. The 24-year-old now faces a potential sentence of 1 1/2 to 8 1/2 years in prison, pending approval from an Allen Superior Court judge.

The Initial Charges

Initially facing up to 45 years in prison, Meyers admitted to Level 5 and Level 6 felony counts of neglect of a dependent in a plea deal with Allen County prosecutors. Alongside 26-year-old Chrisona Denea Bright, she had care of Bre’asia when the child suffered severe injuries.

The Tragic Events

On August 10th, Bre’asia was dropped off to Meyers and Bright by her mother. The following day, the mother returned to find the child unresponsive. Emergency services were called, and the young girl was rushed to a local hospital, where she remained for six days before tragically passing away on August 17.

The Medical Findings

Medical professionals revealed that the child’s injuries were not accidental, with the Allen County Coroner ruling her death as a homicide due to blunt impact injuries to her head. Investigations also uncovered that at least one of the women had used fentanyl while caring for Bre’asia.

The Legal Proceedings

Both Meyers and Bright are currently held in Allen County Jail without bond. Bright is set to face trial in April on charges of neglect of a dependent, while Meyers awaits sentencing on April 19. The community awaits justice for the innocent life lost in this heartbreaking incident.
