Gunmen Open Fire Near Jerusalem Checkpoint

Three terrorists staged a shooting spree to the north of Jerusalem on Thursday, resulting in the death of one man and injuring eight others near a highway checkpoint during a traffic jam, Israeli authorities have reported.

Details of the Attack

According to police reports, two of the gunmen were killed at the scene by security forces and armed civilians, while the third attacker has been detained. The man who lost his life was in his 20s, as confirmed by local medics. The Magen David Adom Ambulance service treated 12 individuals, including a 23-year-old woman in serious condition.

Identity of the Attackers

Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, identified the terrorists as brothers Muhammad Zawahra, 26, and Kathem Zawahra, 31, both residents of the village of Ta’amra near Bethlehem in the West Bank. The third attacker was named as Ahmed Al-Wahsh, 31, also a resident of the Bethlehem area.

Weapons Used

The attackers were armed with assault rifles, makeshift submachine guns, and a grenade, which they used to open fire on civilians waiting in traffic just a few hundred meters from a checkpoint.

Response from Israeli Officials

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir visited the scene of the incident and commended the security forces and armed civilians for their swift response. He emphasized the importance of gun ownership in saving lives and called for increased security measures in the area.

Call for Additional Checkpoints

Mayor of Ma’ale Adumim, Guy Yifrah, has urged the government to construct a new road to prevent shared travel with Palestinian vehicles and install two additional checkpoints for enhanced security measures.

Previous Incidents

This shooting incident comes just a week after another attack at a bus station in southern Israel, where a lone gunman killed two civilians and injured four others before being neutralized by an off-duty IDF officer.
