Fiery Crash on Johnson County Highway Leaves Two Injured

A dramatic incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon on a Johnson County highway, leaving two people injured. The crash occurred at 1:42 p.m. on K-10 highway, just west of K-7 highway in De Soto, Kansas.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, a 2016 Dodge Challenger was travelling eastbound on K-10 at a high rate of speed when it collided with a 2014 Mazda 5 in the left lane. The impact caused both vehicles to roll over, resulting in a fiery scene.

The Dodge Challenger burst into flames, while the Mazda 5 ended up in a ditch on the side of the highway. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to assist the occupants of the vehicles.

The driver of the Mazda, identified as Katharine A. Hirt, 70, from Prairie Village, was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with suspected minor injuries. Fortunately, Hirt was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.

A passenger in the Mazda, Mildred Joann Ketter, 90, from Olathe, also sustained minor injuries and was transported to the same medical facility. Ketter, too, was wearing her seat belt, which likely helped mitigate the extent of her injuries.

On the other hand, the driver of the Dodge, Tarik Franklyn Harris, 25, from Kansas City, Missouri, emerged from the crash unscathed. However, Harris was not wearing a seat belt, highlighting the importance of this safety measure in preventing injuries in accidents.

Another passenger in the Dodge, Shirelle Amilia Wilson, 22, from Topeka, also escaped unharmed. Wilson was wearing her seat belt, underscoring the significance of this simple precautionary measure.

The Kansas Highway Patrol mentioned that a juvenile was also present in the Dodge at the time of the crash, but details about the child’s condition were not immediately available. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and adherence to road regulations to prevent such tragic accidents.
