In a tragic incident that shook the Anacostia community, DC Superior Court Judge Anthony Epstein reluctantly granted a defense attorney’s request to postpone the trial date for a homicide case involving the fatal shooting of 49-year-old Marcus Covington. The incident took place on 23 February 2021 at the Anacostia Metro Station on the 1000 block of Howard Road, SE.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has surveillance footage showing an individual, identified as Kirk Spencer, engaging in a brief conversation with Covington before shooting him multiple times at near point-blank range and fleeing the station.

During a recent court hearing, Spencer’s defense attorneys, Kevin Mosley and Rachel Cicurel, requested a trial date extension, citing reasons related to Mosley’s recent appointment to the case and personal commitments that would prevent him from being present during the original trial dates. This led to a new trial date being set for January 2026.

Despite opposition from the prosecution, who highlighted the challenges they face due to a high volume of pending cases, Judge Epstein granted the motion, acknowledging the importance of effective representation for the defendant and respecting the personal commitments of the defense attorney.

Parties involved in the case are scheduled to reconvene on 12 December 2025 to further address the proceedings and prepare for the upcoming trial in 2026.
