The video shows a confrontation between Maccani, aged 36, and multiple police officers in a downtown Los Angeles building on February 3. The tense situation escalated when Maccani, initially compliant with the officers’ commands, continued to move with what appeared to be a screwdriver in his clenched hands.
In a bid to subdue Maccani, the police officers’ efforts proved unsuccessful, ultimately resulting in the tragic shooting. The footage vividly depicts the moment when Maccani, with his arms raised, advanced towards the police, prompting shots to be fired. Seven officers followed him down a hallway, eventually cornering him, as shown in security footage released by the LAPD. Despite being ordered to walk backwards towards the officers with his hands up, Maccani turned around and continued towards them, leading to the fatal outcome.
The video, along with the 911 call reporting Maccani’s alleged break-in at the downtown L.A. building, was shared on the LAPD’s YouTube channel. Prior to the shooting, Maccani was first hit with less-lethal foam pellets and bean bag rounds, which proved ineffective. Subsequently, an officer resorted to opening fire, striking Maccani. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Maccani grabbed the barrel of the shotgun that had fired the bean bags before being shot by one of the officers and tackled to the ground. He was later taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The police response was prompted by an emergency call reporting an “assault with a deadly weapon” at the warehouse, with the caller alleging that Maccani, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was threatening employees with a stick. Fortunately, none of the warehouse staff or police officers sustained any injuries during the incident.
