Tragic Train Accident Claims Lives of Three NRZ Workers in Mutare

Three National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) workers tragically lost their lives in a train accident that occurred between Mutare and Machipanda on Monday evening. The incident, which took place around 9pm, has left the entire nation in mourning.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the NRZ, the locomotive pulling 14 wagons, including nine laden with export chrome concentrates and five with granite blocks, may have experienced a brake failure. This brake failure likely resulted in a runaway situation that caused the train to derail and fall into a gorge.

Unfortunately, the three NRZ crew members on board were unable to escape and succumbed to the tragic accident. The deceased have been identified as senior engineman Mr Tasunungurwa Mapuranga, yardman Mr Enock Tawabarira, and security officer Mr Pride Femerepi.

Condolences from Transport Minister Felix Mhona

Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona, who is currently attending the 86th session of the United Nations Inland Transport Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. He described the loss as not only a personal tragedy for their loved ones but also a significant blow to the entire ministry and the NRZ community.

Minister Mhona highlighted the invaluable contributions of the three men to the success of NRZ as a key player in bulk logistics and railways. He emphasised that their dedication and service to the company would always be remembered and appreciated.

Investigations Ongoing

Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, and detailed findings will be released in due course. Both the ministry and the NRZ are committed to assisting and supporting the bereaved families during this difficult time.

As the nation mourns the loss of these dedicated NRZ employees, Minister Mhona concluded by saying, “May their souls rest in eternal peace.” The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by those who work tirelessly to keep our railways and transport systems running smoothly.
