Details of Officer Shooting Incident in Winnebago County, Wisconsin

In a recent incident in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently looking into an officer shooting that occurred on Friday, February 2.

The incident took place at approximately 9:40 p.m. when North Fond du Lac Police Department Sergeant Bryce LaLuzerne, who has five years of law enforcement experience, initiated a traffic stop in the Village of North Fond du Lac. The situation escalated when the vehicle fled the traffic stop, leading to a pursuit that eventually ended on Interstate 41 near County Hwy Z in Winnebago County.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Lawrence M. Drennan, age 36, called 911 and indicated that he was armed. Drennan exited the vehicle and approached law enforcement, prompting Sergeant LaLuzerne to discharge his firearm, resulting in Drennan being fatally wounded.

Despite efforts to save his life, Drennan succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were harmed during the incident. In accordance with department policy, Sergeant LaLuzerne has been placed on administrative duty.

It is worth noting that Sergeant LaLuzerne was equipped with a body camera at the time of the incident, and both the North Fond du Lac Police Department and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office have squad cameras. The investigation is being led by DCI, with support from agencies such as the Wisconsin State Patrol, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, and DCI Crime Response Specialists.

All law enforcement agencies involved are fully cooperating with DCI during the course of the investigation, ensuring transparency and thoroughness in examining the details surrounding this tragic event.
