Deadly Shooting Incident Sparks by Altercation in St Ann

Last month, a deadly shooting incident took place outside a fast-food restaurant in Ocho Rios, St Ann, due to an altercation over a female patron cutting the line. The victim, identified as Kajay Simms, 30, a labourer from Gayle, St Mary, was with a group of friends and family members at the Mother’s restaurant on January 27.

Triggered by Line Cutting

According to court documents, Simms and his group were waiting in line to place their orders when a woman cut in front of them, leading to a heated argument that turned physical. The confrontation spilled onto the street as more people got involved, escalating the situation.

Stabbing and Gunfire

It is alleged that Simms pulled out a knife and stabbed two men before gunfire erupted, resulting in his own fatal gunshot wound. Three police constables, Huwayne Ramsay, Marcello Kerr, and Jameil Scott, are facing charges of misprison of felon and misconduct in a public office in connection to the incident.

Legal Proceedings

Five civilians, Dugeon Hall, Onique Hall, Troy Allen, Moyo Kerr, and Fitzgerald Stewart, have also been charged with misprison of felon. While the civilians were granted bail with travel restrictions, the police constables remain in custody after their bail applications were denied.

Critical Response

Attorney Donnovan Collins, representing the policemen, expressed concern over the treatment of his clients, stating that none of the accused persons were seen with a firearm in the video footage. He highlighted the prolonged detention of the accused and emphasized the importance of respecting individuals’ liberty.
