Tragedy struck on Monday evening in Austin, Texas, as a fatal crash on US 183 Toll resulted in the death of a young passenger. This heartbreaking incident marks the city’s sixth fatal crash of the year, highlighting the importance of road safety.

The collision occurred at around 7:20 p.m. on February 12, 2024, in the 200 block of US 183 Toll’s southbound lanes. Austin Police Department (APD) officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a sedan and a hatchback involved in a serious accident. The sedan, which was stationary in the middle lane with its hazard lights on, was rear-ended by the hatchback.

Tragically, two juveniles were passengers in the sedan at the time of the crash. One of them, identified as DeErick Williams II, born on June 15, 2013, sustained life-threatening injuries and, sadly, did not survive. The driver of the sedan emerged unscathed and was found not to be impaired, while the driver of the hatchback sustained minor injuries and is cooperating with the authorities.

With this latest incident, Austin has now recorded six fatal crashes in 2024, equalling the number of fatalities. Comparatively, at the same time last year, the city had seen 11 fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths.
