A homeless man from Kansas City has been taken into custody after allegedly starting a fire at an apartment in Lawrence, Kansas. The incident took place at an apartment complex located just south of Sandra Shaw Park on W. 2nd St. in Lawrence.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, emergency crews responded to a report of a burglary at the apartment complex around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16. The victim informed authorities that the suspect, identified as Trong D. Turner, 27, had broken into his unit by climbing in through a window and proceeded to vandalize the property.

Upon arrival, first responders attempted to persuade Turner to leave the premises, which he eventually did. However, police noticed smoke and flames emanating from the apartment as they apprehended the suspect. The entire complex was evacuated, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Turner was subsequently booked into the Douglas Co. jail at around 6:55 p.m. on charges of aggravated arson and burglary. His address was listed as Faith Hope Homeless Camp in Kansas City, Mo. As of 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, he remains in custody with no bond set.

According to court records, Turner is also implicated in a separate vandalism case, where he faces four counts of criminal damage to property for an incident that took place on Dec. 31. A status conference for that case is scheduled for 9 a.m. on March 13.

The incident has left the residents of the apartment complex shaken, but the swift response of emergency crews prevented any serious harm. The Lawrence Police Department continues to investigate the case to ensure justice is served for all those affected.
