Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A quiet evening in Sterling, Virginia, turned into a nightmare for residents and first responders when a house exploded and burst into flames on Friday night. The incident, which occurred in a Washington, D.C., suburb, resulted in the death of one firefighter and injuries to 10 others.

Discovery of Propane Leak Leads to Tragic Outcome

Firefighters were initially called to the home to investigate a report of a gas smell. Upon arrival, they discovered a 500-gallon underground propane tank with a leak on the side of the residence. Shortly after their arrival, the house exploded, trapping multiple firefighters inside.

Despite the heroic efforts of rescue crews, 45-year-old Trevor Brown, a volunteer firefighter with Sterling Volunteer Fire Company, lost his life in the line of duty. Ten other responders sustained injuries, with four remaining hospitalized as of Saturday morning. Chief Keith Johnson of the Loudoun Fire and Rescue System confirmed that all injured firefighters are expected to survive.

Cause of Explosion Under Investigation

While investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the explosion, Chief Johnson stated that it is believed to be propane-related. The leaking fuel from the underground tank seeped into the home, creating a volatile situation that ultimately led to the tragic blast.

Two individuals who were inside the house at the time of the explosion managed to escape with minor injuries. Firefighters had entered the home to check for occupants and address the gas leak, with a hazardous materials team also on the scene.
