Shalersville Man Accused of Attempted Murder After Shooting Incident in Freedom Township

A Shalersville man is facing serious charges after allegedly trying to kill another man in a shooting incident that took place at a Freedom Township home on February 9. John P. Swigart, 30, has been indicted with a first-degree felony of attempted murder, along with other felonies and misdemeanors, according to Portage County Court of Common Pleas records.

Incident Details

The shooting occurred at a Nichols Road home, just north of State Route 303, with the victim being a 41-year-old man. The victim was shot in the side and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The current condition of the victim remains unknown.

Law Enforcement Response

Upon receiving reports of the shooting, deputies from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office swiftly responded to the scene. Swigart, the alleged shooter, had fled on foot, prompting a search operation in the surrounding area. A lockdown was initiated at James A. Garfield High School and the BIOMED Science Academy Shalersville campus as a precautionary measure.

Arrest and Additional Charges

After negotiations with law enforcement, Swigart surrendered and was taken into custody. He faces additional charges including assault, tampering with evidence, aggravated possession of drugs, failure to comply with police orders, driving under suspension, and obstructing official business. The attempted murder and assault charges come with firearm specifications.

Legal Proceedings

Swigart is scheduled to stand trial on April 16, with a discovery hearing set for March 11 and a pretrial hearing on April 2. Court dates are subject to change, and his legal representation is yet to be disclosed.
