In a heartbreaking turn of events, the autopsy results of a five-year-old Venezuelan boy, Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero, have revealed the cause of his untimely death. The child passed away after falling ill while residing in a temporary migrant shelter located in Pilsen, Chicago, in mid-December.
Cause of Death: Sepsis from Group A Streptococcus
The autopsy results, released on Friday, indicated that the young boy succumbed to sepsis caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS). Commonly known as Group A Strep, this bacterium is notorious for triggering severe and life-threatening infections, including strep throat.
Contributing Factors in the Tragedy
Aside from GAS, the child’s death was also influenced by other factors, including COVID-19, adenovirus, and rhinovirus. These underlying health issues likely exacerbated the severity of his condition.
Medical Emergency and Hospitalization
The initial reports suggested that the child experienced a sudden medical emergency, prompting his immediate transfer to Comer Children’s Hospital. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, he tragically passed away on December 17.
Cluster of Illnesses at the Shelter
Distressingly, the young boy was not the only child affected by the outbreak of illnesses at the temporary shelter on the 2200 block of South Halsted Street. Several other children also fell ill around the same period, raising concerns about the overall health and safety conditions within the facility.
