Short-term use of benzodiazepines may be considered in select situations due to rapid symptom relief, but they carry risks such as sedation, cognitive impairment, falls, and dependence; they are generally not preferred as long-term monotherapy.
Measurement-based care supports effective management. Tools such as the GAD-7 for generalized anxiety and the Panic Disorder Severity Scale help track symptom trajectory and guide adjustments. Lifestyle and supportive interventions—sleep regularity, reduction of stimulants, stress management, and addressing comorbidities such as depression or substance use—can enhance outcomes.
When anxiety becomes severe, clinicians should assess for suicidality, functional impairment, and comorbid disorders. In refractory cases, augmentation strategies may include alternative pharmacologic combinations or structured therapies like acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Overall prognosis varies by disorder type, severity, comorbidity, and treatment adherence, but many patients achieve meaningful symptom reduction and improved functioning with guideline-concordant care.
