Return-to-throw criteria often include pain-free full range of motion, near-normal strength compared with the asymptomatic side, and the ability to perform functional tests without symptom escalation. Overly rapid progression is a common reason for recurrence.

Prevention strategies for youth and amateur athletes include workload monitoring, offseason rest, and coaching interventions that refine mechanics. Coaches can reduce risk by limiting sudden increases in throwing or repetitive hitting with shoulder stressors. Proper warm-up should include dynamic mobility and sport-specific activation to prepare the tendon and neuromuscular system. Technique training should prioritize coordinated trunk rotation, adequate scapular retraction timing, and avoiding compensatory shoulder shrugging or excessive early arm deceleration. Strength and conditioning programs should target the kinetic chain: core endurance, hip mobility, gluteal strength, and scapular stabilization.
