Late-evening light exposure—especially from screens—delays melatonin onset, reduces sleep propensity, and shifts circadian phase later than desired. When work demands keep the individual engaged through the usual evening wind-down period, sleep timing becomes inconsistent, weakening circadian entrainment and increasing the likelihood of difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is first-line and includes stimulus control (using the bed only for sleep and sex, leaving the bed if unable to sleep), sleep restriction therapy (temporarily consolidating sleep to increase efficiency), and cognitive restructuring to reduce maladaptive beliefs about sleep. Sleep hygiene alone is insufficient, but targeted strategies support CBT-I: maintain consistent wake times, avoid screen light in the final 1–2 hours when possible, reduce caffeine after mid-afternoon, and create a predictable pre-sleep routine. For some individuals, timed bright light exposure earlier in the day and dim-light management at night can enhance circadian alignment.
In certain cases, clinicians may consider short-term pharmacologic options, but these are typically adjunctive and require careful evaluation for dependence, next-day impairment, and comorbidities. More importantly, addressing workload structure and stress management is often necessary to remove the precipitating driver. Practical workplace interventions—such as setting realistic deadlines, limiting late-night email triggers, and planning task completion earlier—can reduce hyperarousal and preserve sleep opportunity.
