Structured behavioral interventions—consistent wake time, scheduled light exposure, limiting late caffeine, and implementing a predictable pre-sleep routine—are designed to reduce perpetuating cycles of poor sleep, worry about sleep, and extended time awake in bed.

Practical sleep hygiene guidance usually includes: maintaining a consistent daily wake time (including weekends), getting morning or daytime light to anchor circadian timing, limiting caffeine after mid-afternoon, avoiding heavy meals and alcohol near bedtime, and creating a 20–60 minute wind-down period with low stimulation (dim lights, reduced screen brightness, and calming activities).
