Finally, “professional” detox implies appropriate staffing, monitoring capability, and protocols. Facilities may include continuous observation, medication management, laboratory testing, and escalation pathways for emergencies. The medical goal is to minimize acute harm during withdrawal while rapidly engaging the patient in longer-term, evidence-based treatment for substance use disorder, thereby improving survival, functional recovery, and quality of life.
