For psychological education, it is useful to define the red flags commonly seen in harmful moonshot-driven choices: lack of transparent evidence, absence of peer-reviewed data, pressure for immediate action, guarantees of profit or cure, avoidance of regulatory or safety scrutiny, and unclear mechanisms of benefit. In health contexts, such red flags are ethically significant because they increase the likelihood of misinformation-driven harm.

When assessing patients, clinicians should distinguish normal enthusiasm from clinically relevant impairment. Red flags for pathology include persistent inability to moderate risky behavior, significant functional consequences, or co-occurring symptoms such as mania, severe anxiety, or substance-driven impulsivity. In those cases, a formal psychiatric evaluation may be warranted to evaluate mood episodes, impulse control, or anxiety disorders.

Overall, the medical lesson of “moonshot opportunity” framing is not that people are irrational; rather, cognitive systems are designed to prioritize reward and salience.
