“Government is fascist” statements are not medical diagnoses, but the underlying experience—persistent threat appraisal, moral injury, and collective anxiety—can produce clinically relevant mental and behavioral health effects. When people perceive systemic oppression as imminent or inescapable, the brain’s threat-detection circuitry (notably amygdala-centered salience processing) repeatedly tags information as danger. Chronic exposure to high-arousal threat cues increases sustained activation of stress-response systems, including hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis signaling and sympathetic autonomic output. Over time, this can contribute to sleep disruption, irritability, hypervigilance, impaired concentration, and somatic complaints. In some individuals, repeated waves of perceived collective danger can mimic or worsen anxiety disorders.
A key psychological construct here is intolerance of uncertainty. When the social environment is interpreted as unpredictable, coercive, or permanently hostile, uncertainty tolerance decreases, leading to rumination and “catastrophic forecasting.” Catastrophic forecasting is a cognitive pattern in which the mind generates worst-case outcomes and treats them as likely. Neurocognitively, rumination can reduce flexible attention and increase intrusive thoughts, mediated by fronto-parietal network inefficiency under stress. Clinically, this pattern overlaps with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) phenomenology: excessive worry that is difficult to control, accompanied by physiological arousal and functional impairment.
Another framework is moral injury—the psychological harm that occurs when individuals witness, participate in, or feel betrayed by actions that contradict deeply held moral beliefs. Moral injury is often described in military and human-rights contexts, but it can emerge in civilian political climates where perceived injustice is pervasive. Typical symptoms include persistent guilt, anger, loss of trust, and existential distress. Unlike fear-based anxiety, moral injury is frequently characterized by betrayal and meaning violation, which can produce depressive symptoms, emotional numbing, and social withdrawal.
Collective anxiety also has social contagion dynamics. Social media amplifies threat narratives through rapid repetition, vivid imagery, and identity-based messaging. Observational learning and group-based reinforcement can intensify threat appraisal. Additionally, confirmation bias and motivated reasoning can narrow attention to supportive evidence while discounting disconfirming information. These processes may intensify distress even in people who are not “mentally ill,” especially under conditions of information overload.
From a health perspective, chronic psychosocial stress is associated with dysregulated immune and inflammatory signaling. Prolonged HPA axis activation can alter cortisol rhythms, affecting metabolic function, gut permeability, and inflammatory cascades. Epidemiologically, stress-related mental distress is linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, worsened asthma control, and reduced recovery after illness. Anxiety and depression can also impair health behaviors—reducing sleep quality, decreasing physical activity, increasing substance use, and undermining adherence to medical care.
Risk factors include prior anxiety or depressive disorders, histories of trauma, low social support, high baseline neuroticism, and persistent exposure to stressful content. Protective factors include accurate information, realistic planning, supportive relationships, and engagement in values-consistent action. Importantly, activism and civic engagement can be protective when it is sustainable and coordinated, reducing feelings of helplessness. However, relentless scrolling and nonstop threat interpretation can worsen symptoms.
Evidence-based coping focuses on reducing cognitive and physiological load. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) targets worry through cognitive restructuring, behavioral experiments, and structured problem-solving. For intolerance of uncertainty, CBT techniques often include “worry postponement,” probabilistic thinking, and graded exposure to uncertainty cues. Mindfulness-based approaches teach nonjudgmental awareness of intrusive thoughts without engaging them as threats, improving attentional control and reducing rumination. Stress management via diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and sleep hygiene can modulate autonomic arousal.
For moral injury, interventions emphasizing meaning reconstruction and self-compassion can help. Narrative therapy and compassion-focused strategies may address guilt and shame while restoring a sense of agency. Clinically, when symptoms meet criteria for anxiety disorders or depression, pharmacotherapy may be considered by a clinician; common options include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) for anxiety and depressive syndromes, alongside careful assessment for bipolar risk and substance interactions.
If someone experiences persistent anxiety, panic-like symptoms, insomnia, functional decline, or suicidal thoughts, professional evaluation is warranted. In crisis situations, immediate emergency or crisis resources should be used.
Overall, claims about authoritarianism can function as potent stressors by triggering threat appraisal and moral injury mechanisms. Understanding these pathways supports targeted, evidence-based mental health strategies—combining accurate information, sustainable action, cognitive skills, and stress-regulation—to mitigate anxiety-driven physiological and psychological harm.
