Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are commonly used due to favorable long-term efficacy and tolerability. They modulate serotonergic and noradrenergic signaling, reducing baseline hyperarousal and threat sensitivity. For acute symptom relief, short-term use of benzodiazepines may be considered in selected patients, but their risk profile—including tolerance, dependence, cognitive impairment, and withdrawal—limits long-term use.
Adjunctive strategies include sleep hygiene, limiting caffeine and other stimulants, regular aerobic exercise, and stress management. Addressing medical contributors is essential; thyroid screening or medication review may prevent misdiagnosis. Lifestyle interventions improve autonomic regulation and can enhance psychotherapy outcomes.
Prognosis varies by disorder type and comorbidity, but early identification and structured treatment generally improve functional outcomes. Relapse prevention strategies include ongoing skills practice, monitoring triggers, and maintaining exposure plans when relevant. Importantly, anxiety disorders are treatable conditions with identifiable mechanisms—overactive threat appraisal and impaired regulation—not moral failings or simple personality traits.
