West Virginia State police Involved in Fatal Shooting in Fairlea
In a tragic turn of events on Monday, a male subject was pronounced dead after a trooper-involved shooting in Fairlea. The incident, which took place around 4:04 p.m., involved Cpl. D.P. Dillon and Cpl. J.C. Mann with the West Virginia State Police responding to reports of a suspicious male subject brandishing a deadly weapon.
Upon arrival, the troopers identified the male subject as Justin Denver Grant. Despite verbal orders to drop the weapon, Grant refused to comply. Dillon attempted to subdue him with a Taser, which proved ineffective. As the situation escalated, Dillon was forced to discharge his firearm, striking Grant.
Grant was swiftly transported to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where he was sadly pronounced deceased. Thankfully, Dillon and Mann emerged from the incident unharmed. The West Virginia State Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
New River Gorge Race & Rodeo Set to Kick Off
Shifting gears from the tragic incident, a thrilling event is set to take place on the New River. The New River Gorge Race and Rodeo, hosted by ACE Adventure Resort, will commence on Friday, May 10. The action-packed weekend will feature participants showcasing their skills on the river, with a variety of competitions lined up.
The event will kick off with a display of tricks at ACE’s classic ramp in Cunard, followed by a surfing rodeo at upper railroad hole. The downstream freestyle competition promises to be a highlight, culminating in the upper railroad run out. To fuel up for Saturday’s race, a carbo-load party is scheduled for Friday night.
As the weekend progresses, participants will engage in a lap-timed kayak and raft downstream race covering 6.9 miles from Cunard to Fayette Station. The excitement will continue into Saturday night with an awards ceremony and after-party featuring live music by The Hooten Hollers and The Tan & Sober Gentlemen at the Lost Paddle Bar & Grill.
To conclude the weekend on a positive note, a rafting and river clean-up event organized by the New River Conservancy will provide an opportunity to give back to the environment.
