Identification of Body Found in Lake Ontario

In a recent development, a body that washed up on the shores of Lake Ontario in 1992 has been identified as Vincent Stack, a Buffalo man who went missing in Niagara Falls State Park on Dec. 4, 1990. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office revealed that DNA technology played a crucial role in identifying Stack’s remains, which had drifted a significant distance before washing ashore.

Discovery of Remains

The remains of Vincent Stack were discovered in a badly decomposed and mostly skeletal state, making identification a challenging task. The medical examiner determined that the individual had been deceased for a period ranging between six months and five years. The journey of the remains was quite extensive, drifting 15 miles to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River before traveling 130 miles across Lake Ontario.

Renewed Efforts

Thirty years after Stack’s disappearance, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office decided to renew efforts to identify the remains. Collaborating with the Niagara Regional police Service in Ontario, Canada, Detective Constable Sara Mummery played a crucial role in obtaining a new DNA sample from the remains for comparison with missing person cases in both countries.

Positive Identification

In February of 2024, authorities were finally able to match the DNA sample from the remains with genetic material collected from Stack’s family. Stack, who was 40 at the time of his disappearance, had been listed in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. The sheriff’s office promptly notified Stack’s family of the identification, bringing closure to a decades-old mystery.

Continued Efforts

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and the Niagara Regional Police Service are now focused on identifying other unidentified remains cases in the area. The collaborative efforts between the two departments have shown promising results in bringing closure to families who have been searching for answers for years.

By utilising advanced DNA technology and cross-border cooperation, law enforcement agencies are making significant progress in solving cold cases and providing closure to families of missing individuals. The identification of Vincent Stack’s remains serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of those involved in bringing closure to long-standing mysteries..
