Millions of dollars have been stolen from ATMs across Philadelphia, and the shocking culprit has been identified as an employee who worked on the machines. The investigation into this audacious theft began in August 2022 when the company’s fraud department noticed significant cash losses and alerted the police.
The employee in question, Nicholas J. Anderson, was working at Diebold Nixdorf, a global financial technology company. According to the police criminal complaint filed in January 2023, shortages were discovered in 47 ATMs across the state, including those in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Delaware Counties.
Suspicion fell upon Anderson, and when his company took back his vehicle, an unidentified employee made a shocking discovery. Inside the car, they found $12,050 in cash, a Glock 23 handgun, and a prescription medication bottle belonging to Anderson. The handgun was reported stolen from Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, in 2020. Anderson was subsequently charged with felony theft for stealing a staggering $1.1 million from dozens of ATMs.
The case took an unexpected turn when a separate incident involving ATM skimming was reported. A woman lost $7,250 after her card was skimmed at a local Bank of America ATM. She expressed her shock that such a scam could occur at a bank, stating, “Who in the hell are these people? And how do they have access in broad daylight, and get away with it?” The woman was worried about how she would pay her bills after her account was drained, but fortunately, the two thieves responsible for the skimming were apprehended, and she received her money back from BOA.
Anderson has pleaded guilty to the charges against him and is scheduled to be sentenced in May. In the meantime, he remains free on bail. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to security, both for financial institutions and ATM users..
