Two Individuals Face Multiple Charges in Connection to Gun Club Break-In
Authorities have apprehended two suspects who were involved in a series of crimes, including a break-and-enter at a gun club located north of Calgary. The incident, which occurred on Friday, February 9, prompted residents in the area to seek shelter for several hours.
The break-in took place at the Silver Willow Farm Sporting Club in Mountain View County. The property representative, who contacted the police, was alerted by the on-site security system that two individuals had entered the premises. Upon arriving at the scene, the representative discovered the suspects attempting to flee in a Volkswagen hatchback. However, their getaway was foiled when the vehicle became stuck.
One of the suspects exited the car, brandishing a long-barreled gun, and aimed it at the property representative before fleeing in their direction. Shots were fired, but fortunately, the individual who made the initial call was unharmed.
Law enforcement swiftly arrived at the scene, establishing containment and requesting assistance from the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, and local RCMP units from Olds and Airdrie. As a precautionary measure, residents in the vicinity were instructed to shelter in place.
Shortly thereafter, the police successfully apprehended both suspects. Kyle Nechiporenko, a 37-year-old resident of Calgary, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm without a license, and numerous other offenses. Soleil Wenas, a 20-year-old also from Calgary, faces charges of possessing a firearm without a license and failing to comply with release order conditions.
Connection to Additional Crimes
Further investigation revealed that the two individuals arrested in connection with the gun club break-in were also implicated in several other criminal activities involving golf courses. The Cochrane Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) began their investigation on January 30, identifying the male and female suspects, as well as a VW Jetta believed to be linked to the crimes.
On February 9, the Cochrane CRU, in collaboration with other agencies, executed a search warrant at a residence in northwest Calgary. During the operation, the female suspect was arrested, and stolen property related to the crimes was recovered.
Among the items seized were laptops, motorcycles, firearms, counterfeit identification equipment, tools, Canadian currency, safes, and golf accessories. The recovered evidence led investigators to suspect the duo’s involvement in break-ins at various locations, including the Silver Willow Sporting Club, Cottonwood Golf & Country Club, Sirocco Golf Course, and several others.
Charges and Court Appearances
As a result of their extensive criminal activities, Nechiporenko and Wenas face a range of charges, including attempted murder, break and enter, possession of illegal firearms, and multiple counts of theft and mischief. Both individuals were taken into custody and were scheduled to appear in court on Monday, February 12.
In addition to the two primary suspects, a third woman was also arrested at the Calgary residence. She has been charged with break and enter and possession of stolen property, and is expected to appear in Cochrane court on March 12, 2024.
The swift action taken by law enforcement and the collaborative efforts of various agencies have successfully disrupted the criminal activities of these individuals, providing relief to the affected communities and ensuring the safety of residents.
