Houston police Chief Troy Finner provided an update on Monday regarding the shooting incident at Lakewood Church on Sunday. Finner stated that a 7-year-old child, who was shot when his mother opened fire during a Spanish-speaking service, is currently fighting for his life. A 57-year-old man who was also shot has been released from the hospital.

During the update, Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Chief Finner discussed the ongoing investigation. They revealed that the mental health of the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, is being considered as a contributing factor in the shooting. Authorities are working to determine how Moreno was able to obtain weapons given her mental health history.

Officials discovered two weapons at the scene, including an AR-15, which was legally purchased in December. Additionally, Moreno had a .22 caliber rifle in her possession, and one of the weapons had a sticker that read “Palestine.” Authorities also found anti-Semitic writings, suggesting a dispute with her ex-husband’s Jewish family.

The shooting has raised concerns about safety at religious institutions, prompting Mayor Whitmire to announce enhanced security measures at places of worship. The FBI is collaborating with the Houston Police Department to investigate the incident, and they are urging anyone with information to contact the police.

Authorities provided a timeline of events, indicating that Moreno arrived at Lakewood Church with her 7-year-old son at 1:53 p.m. on Sunday. She confronted a security officer at gunpoint and entered the building. Two minutes later, she began firing shots, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between officers and Moreno. The child was shot in the head during the shootout, and it is unclear whose bullet caused the injury.

Moreno, who used multiple aliases, was killed by two off-duty officers. Despite her criminal history, including prior arrests for assault and theft, the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

As the investigation continues, the community is grappling with the aftermath of the incident. Lakewood Church plans to hold their usual Wednesday service online, with an in-person service scheduled for next Sunday. The church expressed their devastation over the tragedy and the community’s prayers are with the victims and their families.

The shooting at Lakewood Church has highlighted the need for increased security measures at places of worship, raising awareness about the safety of congregants and the importance of addressing mental health issues in society..
