Man Arrested After Shooting police Officer and Hostage in Richland County
Ontario – A man is currently in custody after allegedly shooting a police officer and a woman who was being held hostage in Richland County on Sunday night.
The incident began when Ontario Police officers were dispatched to Landings at Walker Lake on Landings Court at 8:47 p.m. in response to a report of a protection order violation. According to our news partner, WBNS in Columbus, a 911 caller informed the police that the male suspect was armed.
The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Jareth Vance. Upon the officers’ arrival, Vance confronted them while holding a woman hostage at gunpoint. Despite attempts to rescue her, Vance opened fire, striking the officer at least once. The woman was also shot at least once while attempting to escape.
Vance then barricaded himself inside an apartment, taking a 16-year-old hostage. Hostage negotiators were called to the scene to assist in resolving the situation. The standoff lasted for four hours until Vance finally surrendered. Fortunately, the 16-year-old hostage was rescued unharmed.
The injured officer was immediately transported to the hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition. The condition of the woman who was shot remains unknown at this time.
Authorities have not disclosed the specific charges Vance may face in relation to this incident.
