7-Year-Old Boy Shot in Head During Houston Megachurch Shooting Identified as Shooter’s Son
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday at Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, as a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head during a shooting spree. The child, previously believed to be 5 years old, remains in critical condition, according to the Houston police Department.
The shooter has been identified as 36-year-old Genesse Moreno, the mother of the injured child. Moreno, who had a history of mental illness, entered the church armed with two firearms, an AR-15 rifle and a .22-caliber rifle. She immediately started firing shots inside the church, prompting a response from two law enforcement officers who exchanged gunfire with her.
Details surrounding the incident are still being investigated, and it is unclear who shot the child. Moreno was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have discovered anti-Semitic writings and a sticker that said “Palestine” on the AR-15 rifle, suggesting a possible motive for the attack. It was also revealed that Moreno had a family dispute with her ex-husband and some of his Jewish relatives.
The Houston Police Department has confirmed that Moreno had a documented history of mental health issues and had been placed under an emergency detention order in 2016. Despite her mental health background, she was able to legally purchase one of the firearms used in the attack just last December.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner emphasized that the incident is not currently being labeled as a hate crime and urged the public to avoid making assumptions. He highlighted the complexities of the situation, stating, “You have mental illness here, you have a lot going on.”
The investigation into the shooting is still in its early stages, and authorities are reviewing video footage of the incident. Chief Finner assured the public that all relevant evidence will be shared as the investigation progresses.
This shocking turn of events has left the Houston community in disbelief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young boy and his family as they navigate this difficult time..
