In a recent incident that shook Johnson County, law enforcement authorities have identified the suspect who died in a deadly officer-involved shooting as 43-year-old Brett Smiley, according to Shawnee Police.

The tragic event unfolded just after 11 a.m. on a Sunday, when police received reports of a rolling disturbance with shots fired from a truck along Kansas 7, as reported by Shawnee, Kansas Police.

Following the initial reports, Shawnee police rushed to the scene of a robbery in progress at a QuikTrip in the 20600 block of Shawnee Mission Parkway. Upon arrival, officers were confronted with shots being fired inside the business. The officers bravely engaged an armed subject, later identified as Smiley, at the door. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Smiley tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Fortunately, no civilians or officers were harmed during the incident. The Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
