There is no universal or authoritative time standard for solving a LeetCode Medium. As one practical guide, LinkedIn author Harshit Gupta suggests targets of about 45 minutes for beginners, 35 minutes for intermediate learners, and 25 minutes for advanced learners. These are that author’s practice targets—not validated averages or official interview expectations.
How long does it take to solve a LeetCode Medium?
The answer depends partly on what you count as “solving.” A timed attempt might include reading and understanding the prompt, finding an approach, writing the code, and testing it. Other people report only the time needed to reach an approach, so their numbers are not directly comparable.
Gupta’s suggested LeetCode practice targets by experience level put a Medium at 45 minutes for beginners, 35 minutes for intermediate learners, and 25 minutes for advanced learners. The post presents these as goals to work toward and cautions readers not to be discouraged if they take longer.
Personal reports vary considerably. One LeetCode discussion participant said it usually took about 50 to 90 minutes to crack a Medium without coding, while a Blind post described an average of two to three hours including understanding the problem. These are individual experiences, not representative averages, and the different timing definitions make them difficult to compare. A Zhihu response also gives a broad range: some Medium problems took 20 to 40 minutes, while others took more than an hour.
- Finding the approach only: Some people time this separately from implementation.
- Solving end to end: This may include understanding the prompt, developing an approach, coding, and testing.
For that reason, use the figures as reference points rather than a pass-or-fail measure. Taking longer than a suggested target does not, by itself, show that you lack ability or are not ready for interviews.
How long should a LeetCode Easy take?
For comparison, Gupta suggests 30 minutes for beginners, 20 minutes for intermediate learners, and 10 to 15 minutes for advanced learners on an Easy problem. A separate personal response on problem-solving times gives an Easy range of roughly 5 to 20 minutes. The difference is another reason to treat these as rough reference points, not universal benchmarks. The main question here remains how you approach Medium problems.
Why can LeetCode Medium feel difficult?
People report very different amounts of time for Medium problems, so it is reasonable for one problem to feel manageable and another to take much longer. The available accounts are personal anecdotes; they do not establish a typical difficulty level or show why a particular person finds a problem hard. Solving time alone is not a reliable diagnosis of your skills or preparation.
How to use a time target without turning it into a test
Choose a bounded practice window that suits your current experience, then note where the time went: understanding the prompt, working out an approach, coding, or testing. If you do not reach a solution within your target, review what blocked you and use that information to guide your next attempt. The aim is to make practice focused—not to treat a single problem or time limit as a verdict on your ability.
