An elderly driver who was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a young mother and injury of another woman last month has not been charged with a crime, officials report.

The Incident
James Axelson, 84, of Toutle, told The Daily News that he believes he passed out while driving to the senior center for lunch. The accident took place on June 13 when Axelson’s minivan struck and killed Emily Cox, 20, of Longview, before crashing into an apartment building and injuring another woman. The Longview Police Department has not referred the case to the Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, as they were informed that Axelson experienced a “medical event.”

The Aftermath
Marissa Armstrong from Clark County Public Health confirmed that Cox’s death was ruled an accident caused by blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. Cox leaves behind a 7-month-old daughter, and her mother, Lynnelle Cox, described her as her daughter and best friend. Emily had dreams of becoming a registered nurse and had just left her caregiver job before the tragic accident.

The Community Response
The community came together in the wake of Emily Cox’s passing to support her family. Nina Pogue, owner of Rainier’s Hometown Pizza, organized a fundraiser that raised over $10,000 in total. Robert Scott from Gunnar’s Auto Supply provided supplies for a car wash that also contributed to the fundraising efforts.

Remembering Emily
A memorial for Emily Cox now stands at the corner of Florida Street and Seventh Avenue in Longview, a reminder of the young life lost too soon. The tragedy of her passing has united the community in support of her family and in remembrance of the vibrant young woman who had so much potential.

Moving Forward
As the investigation into the accident continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Emily Cox and her family. The impact of the loss is felt deeply by those who knew and loved her, and the community remains committed to supporting them through this difficult time.
