The Incident
James Axelson, 84, of Toutle, told The Daily News that he believes he passed out while driving to the senior center for lunch. The accident took place on June 13 when Axelson’s minivan struck and killed Emily Cox, 20, of Longview, before crashing into an apartment building and injuring another woman. The Longview Police Department has not referred the case to the Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney’s office, as they were informed that Axelson experienced a “medical event.”
The Aftermath
Marissa Armstrong from Clark County Public Health confirmed that Cox’s death was ruled an accident caused by blunt force injuries sustained in the crash. Cox leaves behind a 7-month-old daughter, and her mother, Lynnelle Cox, described her as her daughter and best friend. Emily had dreams of becoming a registered nurse and had just left her caregiver job before the tragic accident.
The Community Response
The community came together in the wake of Emily Cox’s passing to support her family. Nina Pogue, owner of Rainier’s Hometown Pizza, organized a fundraiser that raised over $10,000 in total. Robert Scott from Gunnar’s Auto Supply provided supplies for a car wash that also contributed to the fundraising efforts.
