Man Fatally Shot by Crookston Police Officer identified

In a tragic incident on May 16, 35-year-old Andrew Scott Dale, hailing from Crookston, was fatally shot by a Crookston police officer after allegedly charging towards law enforcement with a hatchet. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has confirmed Dale’s identity and revealed that he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, as determined by a forensic pathologist at the University of North Dakota.

Officers Involved and Use of Force

Officer Nick Fladland, who has five years of law enforcement experience, fired his department-issued handgun during the incident. Following standard protocol, he has been placed on leave. Additionally, Officer Alex Rudnik, with a decade of experience, deployed his Taser, while Deputy Matt Benge, who has five years of experience, fired 40-mm foam less-lethal rounds. Unfortunately, the less-lethal force used by Rudnik and Benge was ineffective in subduing Dale.

Incident Details and Investigation

The BCA’s preliminary investigation unveiled that just before 1 a.m. on May 16, officers spotted Dale walking in the road wielding a hatchet. He then allegedly charged towards them with the weapon. Despite the attempts by Rudnik and Benge to use less-lethal force, Fladland resorted to firing his handgun, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds to Dale. Although the officers provided immediate life-saving care, Dale eventually passed away at the hospital.

Evidence and Video Footage

At the crime scene, BCA crime scene personnel recovered the hatchet and cartridge casings. Body-worn cameras worn by the officers captured crucial segments of the incident, which are now being reviewed by BCA agents as part of an ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, the agency will present its findings to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for further review and potential legal action.

Community Response and Support

The tragic incident has undoubtedly left the Crookston community in shock and mourning. As details continue to emerge, residents are coming together to support both law enforcement officers involved in the incident and the family of Andrew Scott Dale. The local authorities are urging for calm and patience as the investigation unfolds and justice is sought for all parties affected by this unfortunate turn of events..
