A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night when a vehicle going the wrong way collided with a motorcycle on one of New York state’s major parkways, resulting in the loss of the motorcyclist’s life, as reported by State Police. The investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

Statistics released by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, a part of the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, reveal that an average of 162 motorcyclists lost their lives on roads across New York state between 2017 and 2021. These alarming numbers shed light on the dangers that motorcyclists face on the state’s roads.

According to Cellino Law, there are over 750,000 motorcyclists navigating the roads of New York state. With such a high number of motorcyclists, it is crucial to raise awareness about road safety and the importance of sharing the road with all types of vehicles.

The New York State Police responded to a distress call late Tuesday on the Southern State Parkway in the town of Islip, where a wrong-way driver was reported near exit 43A. A Blue 2004 Buick travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes collided with a 2005 Black Honda motorcycle heading eastbound, resulting in a fatal crash.

The impact of the collision ejected the motorcyclist from their vehicle, and both operators were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. While the driver of the Buick sustained minor injuries, the motorcyclist, identified as 42-year-old Hugo H. Cajamarca of Patchogue, tragically lost their life and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
