**Passenger Fatally Injured, Driver Critically Hurt in Hit-and-Run Collision on Alisal Road**

A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Monterey County on Wednesday morning, May 22, 2024, as a passenger lost their life and a driver suffered severe injuries in a two-vehicle collision involving a callous hit-and-run driver. The California Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred at approximately 6:17 a.m. on Alisal Road, just north of Hartnell Road.

According to authorities, a Nissan Altima was heading south on Alisal Road and was slowing down to make a left turn into an agricultural field. At the same time, a white 2001 GMC Yukon was travelling in the same direction and approached the rear of the Nissan. The driver of the GMC attempted to pass the Nissan by moving into the northbound lane, but as the Nissan initiated its left turn into the field, a devastating collision occurred between the two vehicles, resulting in the Nissan coming to a stop at the east side of the road.

Tragically, the driver of the Nissan, a 68-year-old Salinas man, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Natividad Medical Center for urgent medical treatment. Regrettably, his 67-year-old passenger, Maria Elena Chavez D., lost her life at the scene of the collision, leaving a void in the hearts of her loved ones and the community.

The reprehensible hit-and-run driver responsible for causing this catastrophic incident callously fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive. As of now, the identity of the perpetrator remains unknown, and it is uncertain whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The authorities have launched a thorough investigation to apprehend the individual accountable for this senseless act and bring them to justice.
