A heartbreaking discovery was made earlier this month when human remains were found and later identified as Jose Alejandro “Alex” Perez, 44, who had been missing since April 26. The Tyler police Department confirmed this news in a recent press release, shedding light on the tragic turn of events.
Identification of Remains
After receiving information from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas, the Tyler Police Department was able to confirm that the remains discovered on May 5 by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office belonged to Perez. The police department is working closely with the sheriff’s office as the investigation unfolds.
Discovery of the Body
The body was found in the area of the 15400 block of FM 346 East, located between Troup and Whitehouse. Smith County deputies responded to a call about suspicious circumstances on May 5, which led them to the discovery of Perez’s remains. The scene was swiftly secured by deputies and officers from the Troup Police Department.
Autopsy and Investigation
Upon locating Perez’s remains on an oil well service road approximately 100 yards off FM 346, Smith County Investigators and the Crime Scene Unit were called in to further investigate. Justice of the Peace Derrick Choice ordered an autopsy, and the remains were transported to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences (SWIFS) in Dallas for examination.
Search for Answers
With Perez last seen at the Towne Oaks Apartments in Tyler on the night of April 26, detectives were able to locate his Hyundai Sonata at an apartment complex on Hollytree Dr. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities confident in their ability to follow leads that will help identify the suspect(s) involved in Perez’s disappearance and tragic demise.
Family’s Plea for Help
Hilaria Mendez, Perez’s mother, had made a public plea for assistance in locating her son when he first went missing. She spoke to CBS19 about her son, describing him as a caring individual who looked after not only her but also others in his life.
