Tragic Accident on I-83 Claims Lives of Three Workers

Authorities in Pennsylvania have revealed the details surrounding a devastating crash on I-83 in York County that resulted in the loss of three lives. The incident, which occurred last month in the early hours of the morning, has been attributed to a box truck driver who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

Details of the Crash

The tragic event unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on April 17 in the southbound lanes of I-83 between Exit 35, Lewisberry, and Exit 36, Fishing Creek, in Fairview Township. According to Pennsylvania State police, the driver of the box truck was traveling at a speed that was deemed excessive for an active work zone, ultimately leading to the collision.

The impact caused the truck to strike a stationary crash attenuator truck positioned in the right lane before veering off onto the shoulder where it struck three workers. Tragically, all three workers were pronounced dead at the scene. They have since been identified as Jesse McKenzie, 24, of Somerset; Robert Hampe, 42, of Meyersdale; and Philson Hinebaugh III, 24, of Johnstown.

Construction Crews Engaged in Project

At the time of the accident, construction crews were working on a crack-sealing project along that stretch of I-83. The project was scheduled to commence on Monday, with teams working night shifts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. An earlier news release had indicated that there would be rolling lane closures during work hours and urged drivers to exercise caution.

Investigation and Statement

Pennsylvania State Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. In a statement released to the public, authorities emphasized the importance of driver vigilance and adherence to speed limits, especially in areas where construction work is underway.
