In a disturbing turn of events, authorities in Colorado are currently sifting through a plethora of evidence in an effort to identify potential victims after a former employee of a youth organization was found with explicit photos of children. The investigation, which was launched earlier this year, was sparked when the suspect’s wife stumbled upon the disturbing images on a flash drive they shared.
Initial Discovery and Investigation
The Salida police Department revealed that the suspect’s wife came across several pictures of suspected juvenile female genitalia and underwear on the flash drive. She immediately reported her findings to law enforcement, expressing her belief that the images were taken by her husband during his time at the Boys & Girls Club of Chaffee County. Shockingly, she also mentioned finding various sizes of children’s and women’s underwear in their home.
Identification of the Suspect
The suspect was later identified as 42-year-old Brandon Wells of Hartsel. Following the initial report, the police department launched a thorough investigation, eventually obtaining search warrants for Wells’ residence. To ensure the safety of the rest of the family, they were relocated by the Park County Sheriff’s Office Victims Assistance Team.
Execution of Search Warrants
A joint effort involving the Chaffee County Tactical Team, Buena Vista Police Department, Park County Sheriff’s Office, and Salida police detectives led to the execution of the search warrants at Wells’ home. A significant amount of digital evidence was collected during the operation, shedding light on the disturbing nature of the case.
Tragic End to the Investigation
Although Wells was interviewed by detectives, he was not detained. Shockingly, the following day, he was discovered deceased in his residence, an apparent victim of suicide. The Salida Police Department expressed their commitment to thoroughly examine the recovered evidence in order to notify potential victims and their families. Due to the large volume of evidence, this process is expected to take some time.
Continuing Investigation and Assistance
Salida police disclosed that a lab in Colorado Springs is aiding in the investigation. Once potential victims are identified, the department will reach out to their families. It was also revealed that Wells had resigned from the Boys & Girls Club in March 2023 and had no access to the building thereafter. Efforts are underway to determine if he had affiliations with other organizations.
