Concerns raised in Valdosta after teen injured in dirt bike incident

Residents living near Pineview Drive and Deborah Drive in Valdosta are expressing concerns about safety in the area following a recent incident involving a teenager on a dirt bike.

At approximately 9:07 p.m. on Monday night, Valdosta police Officers, Valdosta Firefighters, and South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) Emergency Medical Services responded to the area after receiving multiple calls reporting a traffic collision. The incident involved a person on a dirt bike.

Upon arrival, first responders found a 17-year-old male, the operator of the dirt bike, unresponsive. Immediate first aid was administered, and he was transported to SGMC for further treatment.

Some residents in the area have voiced their fears about the safety of the roads, with one neighbor stating, “Somebody is going to get killed. How many wrecks have we had? Like 7 or 8… I think they told me like 10.”

Valdosta Police Department (VPD) officers determined that the teenager was travelling on Deborah Drive, while a 23-year-old male was driving down Pineview Drive. The dirt bike entered the intersection, leading to a collision with the vehicle.

The driver of the dirt bike was taken to a hospital in Florida and is currently in critical condition. A passenger was also injured but is expected to recover.

VPD Chief Leslie Manahan expressed condolences, saying, “Our prayers go out to everyone involved in and affected by this tragic accident. As temperatures warm up, we do see an increase in dirt bikes and ATVs traveling on our roadways. Please ensure that if you are operating one of these vehicles, you ensure that they are street legal and that all passengers wear helmets.”

Data from the Georgia Department of Transportation revealed that there have been 17 incidents along the stretch of road, with 10 occurring at the intersection of Deborah Drive and Pineview Drive. Some residents have called for better signage in the area to improve safety.

The case is still under investigation by VPD to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
