The Incident
In a recent development, the Columbus police Department has successfully apprehended a shooting suspect from an incident that occurred back in February 2023. The incident took place in the parking lot of a business located in the 6400 block of Veterans Parkway.
The Shooting
On February 10, 2023, officers were patrolling the area when they heard a single gunshot ring out. Although they did not find a victim at the scene, they were informed that a gunshot victim had been brought to Piedmont Northside by private vehicle. The victim was later identified as Wesley Gilmore and was in stable but serious condition.
The Suspect
Witnesses reported seeing a male wearing a grey sweatshirt running through the parking lot and getting into a silver Hyundai after the gunshot was fired. The vehicle was spotted fleeing the scene, with officers catching a partial tag number as it headed north on Veterans Parkway. Following an investigation, the suspect was identified as David Lamar Barnes.
The Charges
Warrants were issued for Barnes on charges of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. After months of pursuit, Barnes was finally arrested on May 8, 2024, and taken to the Muscogee County Jail.
Legal Proceedings
