Province-Wide Child Porn Investigation Leads to Arrests in Thunder Bay
A large-scale investigation into child abuse and pornography, known as Project Aquatic, has resulted in the identification of 34 victims across the province of Ontario. The Ontario Provincial police (OPP) led the operation, which involved 27 different police agencies, including the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Two individuals from Thunder Bay, a 28-year-old male and an 18-year-old, were among the many suspects arrested as part of the investigation. The OPP initiated the investigation in February of this year, targeting individuals involved in the making, possessing, and distributing of child sexual abuse material.
According to a statement released by the OPP, the investigation was launched in response to complaints received from various social media platforms. Items flagged by these platforms were reported to the appropriate authorities, leading to the launch of Project Aquatic.
During a media briefing held on Wednesday, a lead investigator with the OPP revealed that the operation resulted in the safeguarding of 30 children who were removed from unsafe environments. In total, 64 individuals across the province have been charged, with a total of 348 charges laid against them. Many of these cases are still pending in court or are subject to publication bans for various reasons.
Police seized a total of 607 electronic devices during the course of the investigation. One of the suspects was found to be in possession of approximately 21 terabytes of data containing child sexual abuse material. The youngest person arrested during the operation was a 16-year-old from Windsor, while the oldest was an 89-year-old male from Toronto.
