Subrahmanyan : Heavy Rain Causes Chaos in Hyderabad: Traffic Snarls, Power Outages, and Fatalities

The city of Hyderabad in Telangana experienced a sudden downpour that took the city administration by surprise on Tuesday. While the heavy rain brought relief from the scorching heat, it also resulted in unfortunate incidents in various parts of the city.

Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in the Medak region when a wall collapsed during the rain. Additionally, one fatality was reported in both Warangal and Hyderabad due to the heavy rain and strong winds.

According to data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society, Serilingampally received the highest amount of rainfall at 13.3 cm. This was followed by Kukatpally with 11.7 cm, Bachupally with 10.5 cm, Secunderabad with 10.4 cm, and Khairatabad with 10.08 cm of rainfall.

The two individuals who lost their lives in the Medak region were construction workers at a poultry farm near Rayulpur village in Kaudipalli mandal. They were identified as Subrahmanyan (45) and N.Nagu (35). In Warangal district, another person lost their life when a tree fell on them near Katralaya village in Wardhannapet mandal. In Hyderabad, a tragic incident occurred when someone was electrocuted in the Bahadurpura area after coming into contact with an electric pole.

The heavy rain also led to several incidents of trees falling, with 32 complaints reported between 6 pm and 8 pm. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management wing stated that 18 of these complaints were still being addressed. Additionally, 17 complaints of water logging were reported, with three yet to be resolved.

**Power cuts and traffic chaos amid the downpour**

The heavy rain and hailstorms caused major disruptions in vehicular traffic, resulting in congestion at key junctions across the city. The rain, which lasted for an hour in some areas, led to traffic snarls lasting late into the night as main routes were clogged with vehicles.

Traffic jams were reported from the Raidurgam Biodiversity junction to IKEA and other stretches along the IT corridor. The movement of vehicles was also affected on the city’s outskirts.

Meanwhile, power interruptions became a significant concern for residents, with the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) reporting a series of outages in major suburbs late in the evening.
